Aflaj in Oman The aflaj are ancient irrigation systems in the Sultanate of Oman that rely on gravity to channel water from springs or underground sources to farms and households. There are 4,112 aflaj across the country, with three main types: Dawoodi , Aini , and Ghaily . The aflaj are an important part of Oman’s cultural heritage , and in 2006 UNESCO inscribed five of them on the World Heritage List . Types of Aflaj Dawoodi Aflaj: Underground channels that can extend for several kilometers, ensuring a continuous flow of water throughout the year. Aini Aflaj: Systems that draw their water from clear natural springs, which can sometimes be hot springs. Ghaily Aflaj: Surface channels that depend on seasonal water from valleys and wadis, often linked to rainfall.
